Yoga Voice: Setting An Intention

Setting An Intention
Aligning with your Higher Truth

The first time I was in a Yoga class and the instructor asked me to set an intention, I sat their clueless as a child in Pre-K.

Now, I know about setting goals or mapping out a plan, but to process internally and set my personal intention has never crossed my mind.

What the heck is setting and intention? Is it like setting a goal or organizing my thoughts on paper and why do I need to set an intention before I do Yoga? Exactly how do I go about setting one? Is it a prayer like in Church? Do I chant? What?...

If you look up the word in the dictionary (Which also depends on who's dictionary you use and read) it may say “an act or instance of determining mentally upon some action or result” or “is an agent's specific purpose in performing an action or series of actions, the end or goal that is aimed at. Outcomes that are unanticipated or unforeseen are known as unintended consequences”. Then I looked up the meaning in Sanskirt just to make sure I was on the same page with the Yogi Guru's who started this.  So the word intention in Sanskirt is Sankalpa. Sankalpa has many meanings as well, because the Sanskirt dictionary changes its meanings to fit the times of man. This is why its so hard to translate Sanskirt. A scholar has to study the culture in order to understand the definition of the word.

As I did some research to understand what “Setting an Intention” is and how to properly set one before my Yoga practice. Better yet, maybe I should do this off my Yoga mat? How far do I take my intentions?

So, back to the meaning. I have come across a common meaning that resonates with me. It is “ Setting and Intention” (Sankalpa) is a personal resolution you make to yourself internally where no one knows what it is except you.

Oh!..OK...its an internal News Year Resolution!...right?...

Well, I would like to tweek it just a bit. Sankalpa (Setting an Intention) is an intimate resolution you make internally to yourself and to the Divine in the moment in time. Also known as aligning with your higher truth.

 Namaste
